This year, 2nd graders were introduced to the solfege syllables Do and Re. They have been working around songs that use Do, Re, Mi, So and La. Most recently, we started the song Great Big House and the students have shown a great interest in it. There is a dance that goes with it, that begins with a simple circle where everyone holds hands and does the "Grapevine" step moving to the right. Then for the next two verses, students proceed to act out the words to the song by creating a double circle (smaller circle of students in the middle of the bigger circle). Finally, they end by stepping to their right to the beat in the circle.
Students have also begun their Spring Concert song, which is a song called Sakura, about the Cherry blossoms that bloom in the Spring time. It begins in English and has another verse in Japanese.
