1st Grade Music

January Highlights

In first grade, students have been introduced to instrument families! We have been discussing how these instruments work, looking at pictures and then we will listen to them. We have just begun to talk about the Woodwind family through a series of instrument books by Trisha Speed Shaskan. The woodwinds book is entitled: Opening Night with the Woodwind Family! (Check the resources section of the KLo Music blog for the other titles) All books in this series are available through the Minutman Library Network and can be delivered to the Cambridge Public Library from another library, if not available (http://www.mln.lib.ma.us).
Students started the year off beginning their study of solfege! They learned So and Mi and recently learned La. They have learned songs using So, Mi and La, like Lucy Locket, Bounce High, Bounce Low and Rain, Rain, Go Away.
We have started a song called Bluebird which has a game component, where students stand in a circle holding hands. They hold up their joined hands to create " windows" through which a chosen bluebird goes through. Then the bluebird chooses a new bluebird at the end of their turn.
Students will continue their rhythm practice using Ta and Ti Ti (Quarter notes and Eighth notes), clapping and saying them as they are written on a board or on a flashcard, and writing them on their own individual white boards.
Below is the song Bluebird. Enjoy!

Here comes a bluebird through my window
hey diddle dum a day, day, day
Take a little partner, hop in the garden.
hey diddle dum a day, day, day.
